Make Connections
Offering unique products and being active in community events remain as critical as ever to the continued
success of panaderías across America, and this strategy
can be executed in many different ways.
For Culebra Market # 3 in San Antonio, promoting
their business within the local community means yearround involvement in school fundraisers and food donations for community events. Southwest High School in
San Antonio is located right down the road from store
#3, and Culebra Market generously donates breads and
meats to school events.
Victor Ramirez Sr. is the owner of seven stores in the
Culebra Market chain, which has grown to 16 locations
since the business was founded in San Antonio in 1987.
The business is all family owned, and 80 percent of the
stores have a fresh bakery department inside, according
to Victor Ramirez Jr.
All stores have a meat market and taqueria, and
some have a fruteria that serves aguas frescas, raspados
(shaved ice), nachos and individual desserts. This broad
selection adds to the appeal of the overall stores and
creates an environment in which local customers know
they can find what they need.

Popular bakery products at Culebra Market include
Danish, mini pecan pies, cookies and donuts. They fry
their own donuts every day in the store. They offer donuts
with chocolate glaze, cinnamon sugar, chocolate sprinkles
and more.
"Our family business has grown tremendously and
hopefully we will open another location in the next
year," Victor Ramirez Jr. says. "We have stores from the
south side to the north side of San Antonio, and we are
trying to expand to smaller towns outside of the city.
I feel very blessed and honored to continue my dad's
work, and hopefully I will own my own store soon and
go into franchising."
Franchising is also on the mind of Abuelito Bakery,
which has two locations in the Dallas area. "Our brand
is recognized, and a lot of our customers drive here from
Fort Worth, Irving and other places," says Edgar Gonzalez,
who runs the 11-year-old bakery business with his father,
Ruben Gonzalez, and sister, Celia Beltran.
"When we started, we had two workers and now
we have 20. We opened a location in Mesquite, Texas,
in 2012, and hopefully we will keep expanding to add
locations in the Dallas area," he adds.
